Silves was once the capital of the Moorish kingdom of al-Gharb — the Algarve — and its red sandstone castle (Castelo de Silves, 8th century) remains one of the finest military fortifications in Portugal. The town that grew up around it is everything a historic Algarve town should be: an old quarter of narrow streets leading to the cathedral, a riverside promenade along the Arade, an authentic weekly market, and an agricultural hinterland of orange, lemon and almond groves that turns the landscape golden from February onwards.
For buyers who value authenticity above beach access, Silves is the most compelling inland option in the Algarve. It sits 12km from the coast (Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra are the nearest beaches) but at a fraction of the coastal price. The town has a proper commercial centre, a hospital annex (the main unit is in Portimão, 25 minutes), a secondary school, and a genuine town life that operates in Portuguese — which many long-term expats consider the point.
The municipality of Silves includes the market town of Messines to the north and the cork and citrus belt that stretches towards Monchique. The annual Silves Medieval Festival (August) transforms the castle and surrounding streets into a period re-enactment that draws visitors from across Europe and is the largest event of its kind in Portugal.
Property is exceptional value by Algarve standards: a traditional house with a small garden in the old town costs €100,000–€200,000; a modern villa with pool on the outskirts €250,000–€450,000. The A22 motorway connects Silves south to the coast in 15 minutes and east to Faro Airport in 35 minutes.
